In Porto, A Push To Save Portugal's Historic Azulejo Tiles

What are Azulejo tiles and why are they special?

Azulejos (pronounced ah-zoo-le-zhoo sh) are painted ceramic tiles found on the exteriors of buildings throughout Portugal. The tiles are thought to have originated in southern Iran and then made their way to Europe in the 15th century. The first facade tiles date back to 1840 in Lisbon, according to Ferreira and Plaza.
